Oral surgeons are dental specialists who provide surgical procedures for both the hard and soft tissues of the mouth and face. An oral surgeon is often referred to when non-surgical treatments will not be extensive or effective to fully treat an injury, condition, or disease.

Oral & maxillofacial surgeons have specialized training and are accredited by the CDAC (Commission on Dental Accreditation in Canada). In addition to four years of dental school, oral surgeons have completed advanced education programs. Oral surgeons may be called in to diagnose or treat various diseases, injuries, and disorders of the face, mouth, and jaw.

When You Need an Oral Surgeon

Oral surgeons may be needed for a variety of dental and oral health issues, ranging from mild to severe. Surgeries that are performed can include dental implant surgery, gum grafts, jaw surgery, tooth extractions (including wisdom tooth extractions). Depending on the type of oral surgery you need, you may receive sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia for oral surgery.
