Periodontics is a specialized area of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory diseases affecting the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. A periodontist often handles severe cases of periodontal disease (gum disease) and can place dental implants. This can help improve overall oral health and prevent issues such as tooth loss.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

When plaque gathers under the gums, it can cause inflammation that damages the soft tissue of the mouth, which is known as gum disease. One of the earliest forms of gum disease is called gingivitis, and this can be treated with proper at-home and in-office oral hygiene care. However, when gum disease advances and becomes periodontitis, you may be referred to a periodontist for more advanced treatments.

Periodontic Treatments

Periodontists perform both surgical and non-surgical procedures. The type of treatment required is dependent on how advanced periodontal disease is or what the goals of the treatment are. Non-surgical procedures include scaling and root planing, which removes plaque and tartar from under the surface of the gums. Surgical procedures include regenerative procedures, pocket reduction procedures, gum grafts, and dental implants.
